A Multivariate Regression Approach to Adjust AATSR Sea Surface Temperature to In Situ Measurements ArchiMer
Tandeo, Pierre; Autret, Emmanuelle; Piolle, Jean-francois; Tournadre, Jean; Ailliot, Pierre.
The Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) onboard Envisat is designed to provide very accurate measurements of sea surface temperature (SST). Using colocated in situ drifting buoys, a dynamical matchup database (MDB) is used to assess the AATSR-derived SST products more precisely. SST biases are then computed. Currently, Medspiration AATSR SST biases are discrete values and can introduce artificial discontinuities in AATSR level-2 SST fields. The new AATSR SST biases presented in this letter are continuous. They are computed, for nighttime and best proximity confidence data, by linear regression with different MDB covariables (wind speed, latitude, aerosol optical depth, etc.). As found, the difference between dual-view and nadir-only SST...

Age estimation in common sole Solea solea larvae: validation of daily increments and evaluation of a pattern recognition technique ArchiMer
Lagardere, Françoise; Troadec, Herve.
Close similarities have been found between the otoliths of sea-caught and laboratory-reared larvae of the common sole Solea solea (L.), given appropriate temperatures and nourishment of the latter. But from hatching to mouth formation. and during metamorphosis, sole otoliths have proven difficult to read because the increments may be less regular and low contrast. In this study, the growth increments in otoliths of larvae reared at 12 degrees C were counted by light microscopy to test the hypothesis of daily deposition, with some results verified using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and by image analysis in order to compare the reliability of the 2 methods in age estimation. Age was first estimated (in days posthatch) from light micrographs of whole...

An Unstructured Numerical Model to Study Wind-Driven Circulation Patterns in a Managed Coastal Mediterranean Wetland: The Vaccares Lagoon System ArchiMer
Boutron, Olivier; Bertrand, Olivier; Fiandrino, Annie; Hoehener, Patrick; Sandoz, Alain; Cherain, Yves; Coulet, Eric; Chauvelon, Philippe.
The spatiotemporal structure of wind-driven circulation patterns and associated water exchanges can drive important bio-hydrodynamic interactions in shallow lagoons. The Vaccares lagoon system is a complex shallow hydrosystem located in the central part of the Rhone Delta (France). It is internationally recognized as part of a biosphere reserve within the framework of UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Programme, and as a RAMSAR site. Due to its frequent occurrence in this area, and considering the shallowness of the Vaccares lagoon system, wind is assumed to play a major role in the hydrodynamic and biological processes. In this study, a hydrodynamic model was developed to investigate the structure of wind-driven circulations in the Vaccares lagoon system, to...

Assessment of SARAL/AltiKa Wave Height Measurements Relative to Buoy, Jason-2, and Cryosat-2 Data ArchiMer
Hito Sepulveda, Hector; Queffeulou, Pierre; Ardhuin, Fabrice.
SARAL/AltiKa GDR-T are analyzed to assess the quality of the significant wave height (SWH) measurements. SARAL along-track SWH plots reveal cases of erroneous data, more or less isolated, not detected by the quality flags. The anomalies are often correlated with strong attenuation of the Ka-band backscatter coefficient, sensitive to clouds and rain. A quality test based on the 1Hz standard deviation is proposed to detect such anomalies. From buoy comparison, it is shown that SARAL SWH is more accurate than Jason-2, particularly at low SWH, and globally does not require any correction. Results are better with open ocean than with coastal buoys. The scatter and the number of outliers are much larger for coastal buoys. SARAL is then compared with Jason-2 and...

Calibration and Validation of SWAT for the Upper Maquoketa River Watershed AgEcon
Kanwar, Ramesh S.; Reungsang, Pipat; Jha, Manoj K.; Gassman, Philip W.; Ahmad, Khalil; Saleh, Ali.
A validation study has been performed using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model with data collected for the Upper Maquoketa River Watershed (UMRW), which drains over 16,000 ha in northeast Iowa. This validation assessment builds on a previous study with nested modeling for the UMRW that required both the Agricultural Policy EXtender (APEX) model and SWAT. In the nested modeling approach, edge-of-field flows and pollutant load estimates were generated for manure application fields with APEX and were then subsequently routed to the watershed outlet in SWAT, along with flows and pollutant loadings estimated for the rest of the watershed routed to the watershed outlet. In the current study, the entire UMRW cropland area was simulated in SWAT, which...

Calibration and validation of the aquacrop model for the culture lettuce (lactuca sativa l.) under fertilization levels in pluvial condition CIGR Journal
Amirouche, mawhoub.
The search for decision-making tools is essential in order to control agricultural practices and plan for sustainable agriculture that respects the environment. To this end, FAO has developed an evaluation model called AquaCrop, which covers most technical routes, including fertilization. In this perspective, this study focuses on the AquaCrop model (v6.1) to calibrate it for the simulation of lettuce crop yields (Lactuca sativa L), under different fertilization levels for the trial periods (2015/2016) and (2016/2017). Four levels of fertilization were examined under rain conditions, namely T1 (0 kg N/ha), T2 (60 kg N/ha), T3 (120 kg N/ha) and T4 (180 kg N/ha). The model performance was evaluated using the coefficient of determination (R2), the square root...

Development and validation of a microbiological assay for determination of chlorhexidine digluconate in aqueous solution BJPS
Fiorentino,Flávia Angélica Másquio; Corrêa,Marcos Antonio; Salgado,Hérida Regina Nunes.
Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a broad-spectrum antiseptic that is used in many topical pharmaceutical formulations. Because there is no official microbiological assay reported in the literature that is used to quantify CHX, this paper reports the development and validation of a simple, sensitive, accurate and reproducible agar diffusion method for the dosage of chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX-D) in an aqueous solution. The assay is based on the inhibitory effect of CHX-D upon the strain of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, which is used as the test microorganism. The design 3x3 parallel-line model was used. The results were treated statistically by analysis of variance (ANOVA), and they were excellent in terms of linearity (r = 0.9999), presenting a significant...

Development and validation of an analytical method using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to determine ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate in topical repellent formulations BJPS
Pinto,Isadora Cabral; Cerqueira-Coutinho,Cristal; Freitas,Zaida Maria Faria de; Santos,Elisabete Pereira dos; Carmo,Flávia Almada do; Ricci Junior,Eduardo.
ABSTRACT Diseases caused by insects are frequent in poor countries, leading to epidemic scenarios in urban areas; e.g., Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. For this reason, the development of a safe and efficient topical formulation is essential. Ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate (EB) is a mosquito repellent developed by Merck, which is used in products for adults, children and especially babies, due to its low allergenic potential. The aim of this work was to validate an analytical methodology to quantify EB in a new poloxamer-based formulation by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The quantification methodology was performed at 40 ºC using a Kromasil reverse-phase column (C18), with the dimensions of 250 x 4.6 mm. The mobile phase was...
